with the AD indicators.
Advance Decline Issues -
The term "declines" represents a cumulative (i.e., running) total of
the number of stocks (issues) that have fallen in price compared to
their close on the previous trading day...
Advance
Decline Volume - "Declines volume" is the running total
(cumulative sum) of the number of shares traded for all those
securities that belong to the declines group for a given time
period...
Advance Decline
Line -If the term is applied to issues (securities), the "A-D
issues line" represents the difference between the number of
advancing and declining issues. To calculate the A-D issues line, we
simply subtract the number of stocks that belong to the declines
group from the number of stocks that belong to the advances group...
Advance Decline
Ratio - Together with the advance-decline line, the
advance/decline ratio is considered one of the best indicators of
the overall market health. An advance/decline ratio with a large
positive value indicates a strong market performance (positive
market momentum), while a negative ratio represents a weak
performance (negative market momentum)...
Why Study Volume
- The advance/decline volume ratio can be used to determine the
point at which an up-trend starts to lose momentum, as a large
number of high-priced shares are switching hands ("distribution").
Overbought /
Oversold - Applying "overbought/oversold" as a technical market
indicator supposedly gives indications as to what stage the market
is at and whether one should buy or sell. Examples
Example of
Volume Spikes - When you look at the big volume spikes shown in
the following examples, ask yourself what could possibly have caused
all this extraordinary volume activity and how might this affect the
S&P 500 index...
